Kickemuit Middle School Sixth Grade Band braces for its debut performance

Annual winter concert of beginner group is January 23

The next scheduled concert performance by the student musicians at Kickemuit Middle School is set for Thursday, Jan. 23, in the KMS Performing Arts Center as the winter show by the Husky Sixth Grade Band begins at 7 p.m.

Featured music is favorite "Folk" songs, according to band director Susan Winterbottom-Shadday. The expected list is as follows: "Hot Cross Buns," "Merrily We Roll Along," "Au Claire de la Lune," "Jingle Bells," "Lightly Row," "Good King Wenceslas," "Sweetly Sings the Donkey," and "Twinkling Stars" as well as an arrangement of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." Each instrument section of the band will have a special feature piece.

Winterbottom-Shadday explained the sixth grade band is a beginner group. This will be the first public performance of the members as a group. Of note as well, H. Bennett Burnham is a volunteer instructor who regularly helps with the KMS band program

Winterbottom-Shadday said the sixth grade band benefitted from a recent grant provided by the Bristol Warren Education Foundation. The grant, she continued, "allowed the students to work in small groups with instrumental experts during the month of October, when they were first beginning to play."

Winterbottom-Shadday added, "We're really grateful for this program because it has allowed our beginners to get started with a solid foundation. They've been able to learn much more quickly because of this special, small group instruction, and when they united as a full band, they were able to play music together right away, without a lot of stopping and starting."

Doors for KMS Husky Sixth Grade Band concert open Thursday at 6:45 p.m. There is no cost to attend, however donations will be graciously accepted at the door. The suggested offering is $5 for adults. Children, students and seniors are admitted free.

Following the sixth grade winter show, the next performances for the KMS bands and choruses will be in the Bristol Warren Regional School District All Chorus and All Bands Concerts. The All Chorus show is scheduled for Monday, March 10, at Roger Williams University with the All Bands performance set to take place the next evening, Tuesday, March 11, also at RWU.
