Editor's Note: Scott Cary, co-owner of Stingy Alley, submitted the following letter he sent to Stanley Fafara, owner of Jack's Bar who is in the midst of another battle with cancer, this one likely the toughest he's faced. Cary wanted to make the larger community aware of Fafara's condition while expressing his own feelings about his friend.
Hey Stan.
The gang at Jack's told me that you weren't doing that well. I wanted to let you know that we are all thinking of you and praying for you. Almost twenty years ago when Joel, Amy, my dad Harry and I were building Square Peg we were so happy to have a place like yours to walk across the street to after a long day of swinging hammers in twenty degree temps. It got us through some long and trying years.
In Jack's, you've created something that has become symbolic of Warren and I am always eager to tell everyone about it. It's been the place of many political arguments for my sometimes crazy family so I'm sorry if we ever got too out of control!
Then again, it's also been a place of so many wonderful memories and new friendships. Possibly my favorite thing in life is working on my house on a Saturday when my dad calls and says, "Hey bud, you wanna meet for a few at Jack's?" I always go. I wouldn't miss it for the world.
There's nothing better than seeing you, Johnny, Will, Diddy, Kenny, Rip, Joanie, Bain and so many regulars throughout the years. It's like rounding third base and coming home. It's like crawling back into the proverbial womb. It's a place you can always hang your hat. People need places like Jack's in the world.
So thank you Stan for sharing your vision with us and inviting us into your place with open arms. And for keeping it simple. I pray, God willing, that Jack's will be around for many younger generations to experience like we got to. Your buddy,
Scott Cary
