Letter: Barrington Farm School opens for the season

To the editor:

As the 2025 season begins, Barrington Farm School reflects with deep gratitude on the continued support of our vibrant community. With your help, we’ve preserved this cherished 3.4-acre family farm—continuously cultivated since 1897—and furthered our mission to grow food, inspire learning, build community, and foster connection to the land.

Each week, we donate fresh vegetables to local food pantries, a commitment that feels more vital than ever. Our impact is only possible thanks to the fun-loving, hard-working volunteers who give their time and energy to everything from planting and harvesting to running the farm stand, supporting school field trips, leading children's programs, building infrastructure, creating flower bouquets, and helping with our composting efforts.

Volunteering at Barrington Farm School is more than lending a hand—it’s a way to connect with others, build new skills, and contribute to something meaningful. It’s good for the mind, body, heart, and soul.

We extend a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has helped bring our mission to life. Your ongoing support is what keeps this community-centered farm thriving.

We’re excited to welcome everyone to our Farm Stand Opening Day on May 3, which will feature a Maker’s Market full of farm family treasures and a special Memorial Tree planting with Bartlett Trees and local Girl Scouts at 10 a.m.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
