To the editor:

Having just read the Barrington Times Police Report, I have a fairly serious concern with the Barrington Police issuing a warning to a reckless teen driver. 

I am a professional driver and have been for the past 20 years. 

I have raced cars, motorcycles and have had my share of road incidents. 

I have taken defensive driving courses, skid control schools and safety instruction. 

I have also given driving lessons to a number of young drivers, children of my car service clients.

Here is my beef: The police did no favor by issuing only a warning to this young traffic offender. The lesson this young man left with is that there are no serious consequences to irresponsible driving.

If he felt that he got away with careless driving (not to mention running from the police) this time, no telling how he will respond the next time when it will be a much more serious incident. 

I’m not being self righteous. I take driving very seriously and every time I hear or read about young kids losing their lives because of irresponsible behavior behind the wheel it makes me sad and angry.

Life lessons aren’t always easy and if the authorities are lenient at this stage of their development they will have learned nothing and may lead to irreversible tragedy.
