I recently read an article in the Sakonnet Times regarding town councilor John Edwards’ proposal to transition Tiverton to an automated trash pickup system. I have several concerns about this change and would like to voice my opposition to the proposal.
First, has consideration been given to where these oversized bins will be stored? Many homes in Tiverton do not have the necessary space to keep them in a garage or other designated area, meaning homeowners may be forced to store them in visible locations, impacting neighborhood aesthetics.
I am especially concerned about how this system will impact elderly and handicapped residents. Many may struggle to move these large bins to the curb each week, creating an unnecessary hardship. Has the town council considered accommodations for these individuals?
Another issue is the cost. You were quoted as saying that PAYT bags have not generated as much revenue "as the town would like to see." However, for residents like myself who use only one bag per week, the proposed annual fee of $100 for a 65- or 95-gallon bin would be significantly higher than what we currently pay. Would residents still have the option to continue using PAYT bags instead of the automated system?
Overall, I believe this proposal is unnecessary and would impose logistical and financial burdens on many Tiverton residents. I urge the town council to reconsider this transition and explore alternative solutions that better serve the community's needs.
