Over the months of September through November, folks in Tiverton watched as the RIDOT completely redid the existing sidewalks along our waterfront and added sidewalks to the east side of Main Road. Main Road was also resurfaced in the northern end of town.
This was a massive project and will make Tiverton more pedestrian friendly and contribute to the health and wellness of citizens and visitors as they walk along the waterfront. We now have more connectivity. People can safely walk from Stone Bridge to Nanaquaket Road.
After this project started, I wondered about its funding. Did anyone else? The RIDOT website did not provide any answers so I thought I would write to our member of Congress, Gabe Amo. My suspicion was that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) paid for some or all of the project. One of his assistants returned by e-mail with a phone call and said YES, the BIL covered almost half of this multimillion dollar project.
The BIL was passed in 2021 to address our nation's crumbling infrastructure of bridges and roads and expand access to clean drinking water and high speed Internet for parts of America lacking in these amenities that are often taken for granted. If you want to learn more about this once-in-a generation initiative, check out www.fhwa.dot.gov/bipartisan-infrastructure-law
In closing, I wish to thank all of the workers who pressed on day after day to get this project completed before cold weather set in. Well done.
