I recently read the letter to the editor about low income housing in Little Compton. I have to bring people in Little Compton back to reality.
Having lived in Tiverton most of my life and having moved to Little Compton just four years ago, I think I can add something to this discussion. If you take a closer look at Tiverton, they keep getting larger and larger and soon will have to be called a “city”! There is so much congestion on the Main Road, etc. and the roads are in such disrepair it is a shame.
Now, Little Compton is very, very rural compared to Tiverton. There are no big box stores, not many restaurants, etc. Consequently we have very low taxes and the children in our schools got a great education due to smaller classrooms so the reward is more learning going on! What is wrong with that?
Low income housing will be a disaster here. You need a good car to go anywhere to shop at least half an hour away. You cannot walk to a store or restaurant for the most part, even if you wanted to attempt it. There is no public transportation here — no Uber, etc. It is even hard to get anyone to drop off a pizza!
Low income housing belongs in the bigger towns or cities that have the amenities to accommodate these families. Right now you say some people in town can’t afford their rent. How much do you think rents will be when we have to build more schools to accommodate the influx of children? Check out the taxes in Tiverton — almost every year they hit the 4 percent cap on increase in their taxes. Our taxes are much lower here for a larger home and more land. What is wrong with that?
People move to Little Compton to avoid congestion, not have it follow us here.
