Letter: Thanks to Phoenix for publishing a racist letter

Posted

Last week, the Phoenix published a letter to the editor regarding the recent cases of racist and hate filled stickers being placed in Bristol and Warren which was full of personal attacks on local legislators and private citizens who have been vocal in their support for racial justice and equality, and while I was originally outraged that the Phoenix would publish such an outrageous and insensitive letter, after thinking about it, I actually want to applaud the Phoenix for publishing that letter to the editor.

While the letter writer’s racist and personal attacks were uncalled for and morally reprehensible, the Phoenix did an important public service in publishing the letter, as it shows that prejudice, bias, and outright racism are alive and well in our town, and that we must increase our efforts to promote racial equality and racial justice, and also denounce individuals such as last week’s letter writer, who instead of promoting and embracing diversity and inclusion, would rather fan the flames of white supremacy and intolerance.

Once again, thank you to the Phoenix for bringing this issue to light, and showing how much work we as a town and as a society need to do regarding intolerance and racism.
