Letter: The dangers of teaching ‘Generation Citizen’

Posted

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jonathan Brice, under his five-year strategic plan, is proposing the expansion of Generation Citizen within our middle school. Generation Citizen is a progressive organization that wants to replace “traditional civics” with something they call “action civics.”

Traditional civics teaches students the branches of government, locally, statewide and federally, and how lawmakers work within the framing of the Constitution to draft legislation and create laws.

Action civics, according to a Generation Citizen website, takes into account “systemic oppression, power, and privilege and centers youth voices in the classroom.”  It teaches students to become politically active in their daily lives and advocate for progressive causes. Schools are encouraged to indoctrinate students in progressive ideologic thinking.

State Rep. Brian Newberry and State Sen. Jessica de la Cruz have sponsored legislation to promote “Action Civics.” While they believe their Action Civics legislation will restore the teaching of traditional civics, the folks at Generation Citizen will prey on the weakness in the bill’s language and over time control what your students are taught.

This moment in time is pivotal to the future of your child’s education. Do you want them learning about this nation’s founding documents and governmental structure or the ideology of an ever-growing social justice woke school of thought? Do you want your children as young as sixth-grade being indoctrinated into supporting progressive ideologies?

I believe education should and must be balanced and taught right down the middle. Children, as they develop critical thinking skills, can decide for themselves what value system they will embrace without the pressure of their teachers or peers.

I urge you to reach out to Dr. Brice, Rep. Newberry, and Sen. de la Cruz and demand that they restore traditional civics. Read more about Generation Citizen at, https://generationcitizen.org/our-impact/theory-of-change/.
