To the editor:

As you may have read in this paper last week, BHS is not participating in unified volleyball right now. When asked why, the reasons from the district are that it was up to the league, or that it was out of safety concerns.

I reached out to both RI Special Olympics and the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, and was told they were 100 percent fully supportive of unified sports for this current shortened season. And that it’s district choice whether or not to participate.

Other districts in Rhode Island are participating in unified sports right now. Our neighbor East Providence made a choice to participate in unified sports this month at the high school and middle school level. 

Yes, Barrington has had unified sports in the past. This March-April season it was an option again after a long year. The issue is why - when everyone is looking forward to getting back to some normalcy -a decision within our district was made to deny a group of Eagle students the same opportunity others were given?
