Letter: We must stop climate change today

Posted

To the editor:

Climate change has caused the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the hurricane in Florida, the tornadoes in Kentucky, the drought in California, and so much more. Climate change has made Rhode Island’s temperature averaging 40 degrees most of the winter.

We must stop climate change today. Some solutions include getting 100 percent renewable energy, stop eating red meat, and compost.

Getting 100 percent renewable energy can come from community solar or wind, which is about 10 percent cheaper than Rhode Island Energy. The energy is distributed through Rhode Island Energy, at no extra cost.

Red meat has the highest carbon footprint of any meat at 1 kg of Beef = 70 kg of carbon dioxide. Also, red meat is usually the most expensive type of meat. Killing the cow for the beef is like killing a human. Cows have feelings, and would you want to eat beef at the cost of a nice cow? We should stop eating red meat!

Finally, we should all compost our food scraps. Food waste makes up about 24 percent of our landfills. If we were to compost our food scraps, we would save 24 percent of our landfill space.

We can start a compost bin in our backyards, or bring our compost to a community drop-off bin, like the Barrington Farm School.

Thank you,

Jeremy Lavin
