Little girl with big dreams performs at Symphony Hall

Julia Little taking her talents to Tanglewood this summer

Barrington resident Julia Little is living out her dream — the nine-year-old recently performed in Ragtime at Symphony Hall in Boston and will take her talents to Tanglewood this summer.

Julia has been performing musical theater for five years, and is known locally for her roles as Jojo in Seussical, Veruca Salt in Willy Wonka, and Molly in Annie Jr. The young resident loves to sing and has performed with the Rhode Island Children’s Chorus, in school and theater showcases, and for the local senior center.

Kyra Little has known for a while that her daughter was destined for the stage.

“When Julia was young and would want a bedtime story that was calming, she loved when I would talk about her being on stage in front of lots of people singing,” Kyra wrote in an email to the Barrington Times. “That’s how I knew she was a performer. That would make most people nervous, not calm. With the thought of performing she would quickly fall asleep with a smile on her face.”

Kyra wrote that Julia first became interested in performing when she began attending musicals her aunt was involved in at Barrington High School. Julia was three at the time.

When she grew old enough, Julia began acting and singing in local productions.

“Julia has always loved singing and has been singing since a very early age,” Kyra wrote.

When Julia’s family first moved to Barrington, the neighbors initially knew them as “the family with the girl who sings.” Kyra wrote that Julia also loves acting — being able to tell a story in a fun and creative way.

“She loves performing arts because it is a blend of all the things she loves combined into one place,” Kyra wrote.

Julia’s move from local stages to Symphony Hall began in January. A casting company posted a notice on social media about auditions for the role of “The Little Girl” in Ragtime. The performance was to feature the Boston Pops.

Kyra responded with Julia’s information and was later asked to send in a video as part of the audition process.

The final call back was in-person at Symphony Hall in Boston.

“When the email came back that Julia was offered the main role of ‘The Little Girl’ she jumped for joy! This is absolutely a dream come true,” Kyra wrote.

Ragtime took the stage at Symphony Hall on May 12 and 13, and will headline at Tanglewood in July. Kyra believes Julia is living out her dream and has even bigger goals in the future: Broadway productions, recording and performing music, and acting in movies.

When she’s not on stage, Julia likes playing with her friends, drawing, swimming, riding her bike, and reading. She has also written and directed short plays with some of her friends.

Julia is set to be in Barrington Christian Academy’s performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as Jemima in June. She is also booked to be in a short film being produced in New York this summer.
