Beloved wife, sister, mother, and Nana, Lois Ann Fraser McCartney lost her battle with Alzheimer’s and passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was eighty-seven years old and died peacefully at Tockwotton on the Waterfront, in East Providence, RI where she had lived for three and a half years.
Lois Ann Fraser was born on March 24, 1934 in Sudbury, Ontario, to Hertha Lotz and Leland Bertram Fraser. She is predeceased by her sister Janet Fraser Hoeg of Duluth, Minn., and survived by her brother Charles Edward Fraser of Riverhead, NY. She married James Robert McCartney (who continues to reside at Tockwotton on the Waterfront) on June 26, 1954 in Garden City, NY.
Lois graduated from Garden City High School, New York in 1952, received a bachelor's degree in Economics from Wellesley College in 1956, and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Adelphi University in 1974.
Lois had a fulfilling career as a social worker, working as director of cancer programs for Nassau County, NY early in her career, and then as director of social work for Butler Hospital in Providence, RI, from where she retired in the late 90's. Lois had a passion for her profession, but her greatest joy was her family: her husband, Jim and her four children, Lee (Tabetha), Patricia O'Connor (Michael), Douglas (Kimberlee) and Elizabeth Kruse (Russell) and her nine grandchildren: Kyla (Elizabeth), Caroline (Dan), Owen, Kaitlyn (Ben), J. William (Kathleen), Kristin, Billy, Blake, and Anna (Weston). She also leaves four great grandchildren: Nora, Maggie, Natalie, and June Mary Lois.
Lois and Jim lived and raised their children in Garden City, NY before moving to Barrington, RI in 1980. They lived in Barrington for more than twenty years, before moving to Bristol, RI, and then Tockwotton in 2018.
Lois always said “how lucky are we?!” And, we remember that, thinking how lucky we were to have her in our lives. She will be sorely missed by her family, but she will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, and gentle but strong nature.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Butler Hospital Memory & Aging Program (http://bit.ly/LoisButlerDonation) or the RI Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association (http://bit.ly/LoisAlzDonation).
