PORTSMOUTH — A 31-year-old Boston man was arrested shortly after midnight on Tuesday, June 7, after he was observed to be intoxicated while in possession of a handgun without a permit.

While on patrol in the area of Boyds Lane at Chase Road around 12:15 a.m., officers observed a vehicle pull onto the side of the road with its hazards lights activated.

Upon closer inspection, officers saw that the front, driver’s side tire had popped. The driver, identified as Chekawn K. Fields, of 64 Glendale St., Apt. 2, displayed obvious signs of intoxication, police said.

While Mr. Fields performed a field sobriety test that he ended up failing, officers observed a handgun and a knife, with a 4.8-inch long blade, in plain view and within reach of the driver’s seat, police said.

Mr. Fields was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense), carrying a pistol without a license or permit, carrying a weapon while intoxicated, and illegal possession of a weapon other than a firearm. He was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test, police said.

He was held overnight pending his arraignment at 2nd District Court in Newport the following morning.

Here are some more recent highlights from the Portsmouth Police report:

Thursday, June 3

Djeise T. Goncalves, 19, of 578 2nd St., Apt. 3, Fall River, was charged with possession of more than one ounce of marijuana (first offense), and obstructing an officer in execution of duty, shorty before 3 a.m. Mr. Goncalves’s vehicle was pulled over on West Main Road at Raytheon after it was observed traveling over the white fog line by about two tire lengths, police said. Officers observed a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana inside the vehicle in plain view, according to police. Mr. Goncalves initially gave officers a false name, and was also found to have an inactive license, police said.

Kurt A. Stovall, 34, of 65 Walnut St., was charged with firing a BB rifle within a compact area, as well as vandalism with malicious injury to property. He was arrested at his home shortly before 10 a.m. after police received a complaint that he had allegedly fired the BB gun several times into his neighbor’s garage and deck, causing damage to the property, according to police. He ultimately admitted to discharging the BB gun as well as a .22-caliber rifle, according to police.

Kawan O. Hernandez, 41, of 11 Choate St., Fall River, was charged with domestic disorderly conduct in connection with an incident that took place at a North Drive home on June 1, according to police. At that time, officers were dispatched there for a report of a domestic verbal argument, but Mr. Hernandez had already left the scene. He turned himself in at the police station on June 3, according to police. The victim was a 43-year-old woman from Portsmouth, police said.

Gabriella L. Torres, 39, of 1 Bourbon St., was charged with domestic disorderly conduct after police responded to her home around 10:30 p.m. to investigate a report of two disorderly people. When they arrived, witnesses reported that a female, identified as Ms. Torres, had thrown objects within the home both at the floor and at a 69-year-old Portsmouth man with whom she shared a domestic relationship.

Anthony J. Boyd, 21, of 2701 East Main Road, Apt. E, Portsmouth, was charged with illegal possession of a weapon other than a firearm after being pulled over for speeding on Middle Road at Hedly Street around 11:45 a.m. During an inventory search of the vehicle, officers found a baton in the driver’s side door panel, according to police. Mr. Boyd was also cited for driving without an active license (first offense) and issued a summons for speeding (third offense), police said.

Raymond N. Hernandez, 38, of 217 Park Holm, Newport, was arrested on a Newport warrant after being pulled over on West Main Road shorty before 7 p.m. because his vehicle had illegal sunscreen material on the front driver’s side and passenger windows, police said. He was released to the custody of the Newport Police Department at about 8:45 p.m.

Glenn J. Bassett, 33, of 618 Delano Road, Marion, Mass., was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and disorderly conduct after police found him standing outside of his disabled vehicle on the Mt. Hope Bridge shortly before 8 p.m. Police said Mr. Bassett acted in a disorderly manner as he ripped his shirt off, punched the hood of his vehicle several times, and kicked the driver’s side mirror off. He was also yelling profanities as numerous vehicles passed by, police said. Due to his high level of intoxication, Mr. Bassett was taken to Newport Hospital for an evaluation, police said.
