Manuel Alves Brum, 84, of Bristol

Manuel Alves Brum, 84, of Manchester Street, Bristol, passed away on Sept. 13, 2021, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Maria Leopoldina (Leal) Brum. He was  buried one day before their 55th wedding anniversary.

Born in Capelo, Faial, Azores, Portugal, he was son of the late Jose and Maria Madeline (Alves) Brum.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Tony Brum, and his wife Chanda of Bristol; and grandchildren Emilia Brum, Gabriel Brum and Kaleb Brum. He was the brother of Maria Teresa Sousa and the late Jose Brum, Antonio Brum, Francisco Brum, Isauro Brum, Maria Olympia Brum, Maria Madelina Moitoso and Maria Teresa Sousa.

Mr. Brum was educated in Portugal and employed by Pearson Yachts for 25 years. He then went to work for Sunfish Laser, where he made daggerboards.

His funeral services were held Sept. 16 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Jose Rocha at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Laura Leal and Emilia Brum. The Prayer of the Faithful was read by Alexandra Abreu, and the offertory gifts were presented by Noah Baptista and Kaleb Brum.  Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Gabriel Brum, Ryan Brum, Manuel Leal, John Leal, Scott Dasilveira, Kevin Moran, Paul Medeiros and Manuel Garcia.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
