Manuel S. Tavares III, 77, of Bristol

Manuel S. Tavares III, 77, of Bristol passed away June 21, 2021, at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center.  He was the husband of Elizabeth A. (Bernard) Tavares.

Born in Fall River, Mass., he was the son of the late Manuel Jr. and Edveis (Mello) Tavares. In addition to his wife Elizabeth, he is survived by his daughter Aimee Tavares; son-in-law Christopher Langford, and one grandchild, Mason Langford, all of Virginia. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Jennifer Medeiros of Tiverton and Pamela Medeiros of Somerset, as well as two great-grandchildren, Celina and Adelynn Medeiros.

He was the father of the late Peter Tavares, and the brother of the late Dorothy Texeira and John Tavares.

Manuel worked in the maintenance department for Kaiser Aluminum for 20 years until they closed; he then worked for the R.I. Veterans Home for 20 years before retiring.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, June 25, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the George C. Lima Funeral, 367 High St., Bristol. Burial will be private.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
