Mark I. Gitlin, 65, of Barrington

Mark I. Gitlin, of Barrington, R.I., age 65, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Marilynn (Stiman) Gitlin, to whom he was married for 36 years. Mark was a devoted father to his children, Kara, Ethan, and Josie. He is survived by his mother, Goldie Gitlin, and his sisters, Rebecca Eisenberg and Barbara Green.

Mark worked at Mid City Scrap in Westport, Mass. for 50 years. He was a mentor and trusted advisor to many. A man of honor and integrity, Mark devoted his life to growing the family business and ensuring its longevity beyond him.

Mark’s motto in life was to live life well and without regrets. He was an avid golfer, bike rider and body surfer. He especially enjoyed these activities with his family and friends. He adored and was adored by his family.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Plainville Cemetery, 1400 Old Plainville Rd., New Bedford, MA.

Shiva will be observed Thursday, July 29, 2021, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Temple Habonim, 165 New Meadow Road, Barrington, R.I. To leave a note of condolence visit www.sugarmansinai.com.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
