The Mt. Hope High School girls' volleyball team winning streak reached lucky number seven last Thursday night, Oct. 17, as the host Huskies swept away Westerly by a 3-0 count in their annual "Pink Out" game in support of breast cancer awareness.
The locals sent the Bulldogs home with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-13 defeat. Sarah Wilcox had another superb all-around match for the Huskies with five kills, eight digs and eight service aces while Gianna Lunney had 10 assists and added six aces.
"We had a game plan and they executed well," MHHS head coach Lisa Lunney said of her Huskies after the Westerly win. "It was a strong serving night for us. We still have some work to do, but we just keep tweaking a little at a time. We are still not 100% healthy, but we are deep and everyone is stepping up and doing their job. I’m proud of this crew. They're a very resilient bunch of athletes."
Mt. Hope's run climbed to a half-dozen earlier last week after the Huskies easily dismissed Pilgrim Tuesday night, Oct. 15, in Warwick. The locals made quick work of the host Patriots, sweeping the match by the scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-22.
Lunney, herself back in the lineup after missing time with injury, had eight service aces and 10 assists for the locals, who were minus the services of lead hitter Abby Allen. The superb fall of Wilcox continued as she added six aces, had 10 digs and put down four kills in Allen's absence.
The Huskies improved to 11-5 overall at the time with the victories. Despite being stricken by the illness and injury bug in recent weeks, Mt. Hope had not lost since falling to Cumberland back on September 24.
Boys' soccer
Coming off its first loss of the 2024 season, the MHHS boys' soccer team rebounded with a 1-0 victory on the road in Coventry Tuesday night, Oct. 15, over the host Knotty Oakers.
Maddox Canario notched the lone goal of the contest for the locals, who fell to Shea by a 2-0 count in their last outing, off an assist by Aidan Hudak mid-way through the second half in the 60th minute. Cole Tavares and the Mt. Hope defense finished the cleansheet with the sophomore keeper making four saves.
"We played a good game and possessed the ball majority of the game, just couldn’t capitalize on our chances. We hit the crossbar three times and missed plenty of scoring chances," said MHHS head coach Tucker Shepard.
The Huskies reached double digits in wins on the season after host Mt. Hope defeat Lincoln High, 2-1, Thursday night, Oct. 17. The locals improved to 10-1-3 overall on the fall.
Diego Gonzalez notched the brace for the Huskies. His first put Mt. Hope on top in the 29th minute of the game.
Dylan DeOliveira started the sequence with a free kick from about 50 yards out. His high arcing kick to the right post found a cutting Lucas Andreozzi, who headed the ball on frame. Alone on the opposite side, Gonzalez pooched the ball in for the goal,
The visiting Lions answered almost immediately, less than a minute later when on the counter a couple Lincoln players worked one-touch soccer perfectly to beat Mt. Hope keeper Tavares to tie the scored in the 30th minute.
Gonzalez netted the game-winning tally off a similarly well-executed corner kick. Aidan Hudak took the kick, delivering the ball to the far post. A brief scrum ensued with Gonzalez heading in the goal in the 52nd minute. The goals were the eighth and ninth of the fall for the junior.
Girls' soccer
The MHHS girls' soccer club stopped a recent four-match losing skid with a 3-1 victory in South Kingstown Tuesday night, Oct. 15, over the host Rebels.
Sara Nencka scored twice for the Huskies. Thea Jackson had a goal and assisted on both of Nencka's goals. Kendra Ascoli also had a helper while keeper Moira Ware had nine saves.
"It was a great team win," said MHHS head coach Kerri Giarusso, whose Huskies improved to 5-8-0 overall with the win.
Girls' tennis
The MHHS girls' tennis team closed out the home portion of its rebuilding 2024 campaign Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 15, with a 7-0 loss to the visiting East Greenwich Avengers.
The Huskies honored their three seniors and top three singles players: Emma Coelho, Elena Oliveira and Emma Alice Caetano. Each fell in two sets in their home finale, Caetano playing the most competitive of the matches with a 6-2, 7-5 loss. Freshman Kaia Brown dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision at fourth singles.
Mt. Hope dropped its next outing the following day, October 16, Narragansett by the same 7-0 count. Brown again played a competitive match from the four position, falling 1-and-2, while the Huskies' No. 1 doubles team of Maggie Dufficy and Lexi Sousa lost 6-3 and 6-2. The locals dropped to 2-11 for the fall.
KMS soccer
The respective Kickemuit Middle School soccer teams both finished their regular seasons Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The boys got their 10th win without a loss following their 6-1 win over Thompson-Newport. Dominic Oliveira, Matt Williams, Colin Kiselka, Tyler Motta, Aiden Medeiros and Myles Medeiros scored the goals. Kobe King had three assists while Motta and Austin Armillotto had one each.
KMS finished with a 10-0-4 record overall, 7-0-3 in its region to place first and secure a high seed in the upcoming state playoffs.

The junior Huskies also placed atop their region during the regular season with a 10-0-0 record and will be among the highest seeds in the playoffs with their 14-0-0 overall mark.
