The Mt. Hope High School just can't seem to stop winning of late as the Huskies began the final week of regular season play at Exeter-West Greenwich Monday night, Oct. 21 by sweeping the host Scarlet Knights in three relatively close sets, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17 for their ninth consecutive win.
Mt. Hope improved to 12-5 in the Division II standings with the victory to sit with the second-best overall record in the league behind only 13-2 Barrington.
Against the Knights, Sarah Wilcox did what she does, filling the scoresheet with three aces, five digs and six kills. Leah Marshall had five aces and four kills. Gianna Lunney had 11 assists and three aces.
"We did just enough and had two players out with a virus," said MHHS head coach Lisa Lunney, whose Huskies have contended the near-constant strain of illness and injury all fall. "I did get everyone in tonight. I was glad to be able to do that."
The Huskies wrap up their regular season and shoot for their 10th win in a row when they play host to Middletown on Senior Night Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m.
KMS girls' soccer wins
The respective Kickemuit Middle School soccer teams both began play in their respective playoffs Friday afternoon, Oct. 18, the girls' maintaining their unblemished record with a thrilling, 3-2 victory over visiting Scituate on penalty kicks
Brooke Avila and Mya Salvatore scored during regular time and Mya Salvatore scored winning PK as the Huskies fended off the Spartans in the opening round of the state playoffs. Ava Pereira made three saves in net for the locals.
The KMS girls earlier last week ended the regular season unbeaten, no losses nor ties, in 14 games after Thompson forfeited their game on October 15.
The junior Huskies, who placed atop their region during the regular season with a 10-0-0 record, improved to 15-0-0 overall with the playoff win.
KMS is set to host Lincoln in a quarterfinal round contest Tuesday, Oct. 22, on the Mt. Hope High campus at 5 p.m.
KMS boys' soccer falls
At Ponaganset, also on October 18, the host Chieftains scored twice in the second half to overcome a short-handed KMS boys' club, playing with only 10 men due to infractions, to hand the Huskies their first and only loss of the fall, 2-1.
Mason Reis scored the lone goal for the Huskies and keeper Andrew Vieira made six saves. The Huskies were called for 17 fouls to just two for Ponaganset, saw eight yellow cards and played a man-down following a red.
"It was tough, but they played through it and played their hearts out," said KMS head coach Jeff Motta, whose team finished 2024 with a 10-1-4 overall record.
