It wasn't as easy as it would appear, but the Mt. Hope High School boys' volleyball club returned to action last week with yet another three-set sweep this time over visiting Davies Career & Tech in Fitzgerald Gym Monday night, April 28.
The Huskies, with two starters out due to illness/injury, defeated the Patriots by the scores of 25-23, 28-26 and 25-21. The shutout was the fourth in a row for the locals and seventh to date at the time. Mt. Hope improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in Division III matches.
"It was a really rough night, missing two starters. We struggled a bit, but we finished the way we needed to. But it was a tough fight," said MHHS head coach Lisa Lunney.
Dylan Shaw led the locals with 13 kills and added three digs. Gianfranco Semeraro-Bellanca had 10 kills, three blocks and two digs. Matt Moran added eight kills, seven digs and a pair of service aces.
Baseball
Since picking up its first win a few weeks back, the Mt. Hope High baseball nine slumped with a handful of one-sided losses in Division I play and a close, 6-5 setback to St. Raphael in non-league outing.
Against the Saints, the Huskies fell behind 2-0, but rallied to tie then take the lead, 5-2, with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. St. Ray's, though, matched that in the bottom of the frame and later plated the winning run in the home-half of the seventh.
Brian Abbruzzi, Logan Dubois, Jacob Ferreira, Trace Dubois and Brayden Cummins each had two hits for the locals. Abbruzzi drove in a pair.
Golf
The Mt. Hope High golf group picked up its first sweep of the 2025 season as the host Huskies defeated both Middletown and Eastern Division newcomer Providence Country Day Monday, April 28, at Swansea Country Club.
Mt. Hope finished with a team total of 170, Middletown 180 and PCD 204. The Huskies' Ben Peters was the day's medalist, carding a 1-over, 37 on the front nine at SCC. Jackson Howland shot 42, Luke Domina 44 and Lucas Andreozzi the final counting score of 47. Brennan McLaughlin played his first varsity match, shooting 48. The Huskies improved to 4-2 in league contests at the time.
KMS softball
The Kickemuit Middle School softball side fell to Tiverton in its most recent outing. Rachel Castigiliego had a pair of hits for the locals. Aubrey Birchell stole three bases and scored twice. Brooke Farias had a hit and two steals.
