BRISTOL-WARREN — The Mt. Hope High School girls' volleyball team began last week with a 3-1 victory over West Warwick Tuesday night, Oct. 1, for the Huskies' second win in a row and raising their record to 5-5 at the time.

Sarah Wilcox had a huge evening for the locals with 16 digs, 12 assists and five kills. Ahna Rozea added 14 helpers and three service aces. At net, Margherita Dellolio had nine kills while Abby Allen had seven spikes and four blocks.

Girls' soccer
The MHHS girls' soccer squad also climbed back to .500 and ended a brief two-game slide with a 2-0 victory over host Smithfield on October 1. The Huskies leveled their record to 4-4-0 with the win.

Senior captain Lilliana Redman scored the Mt. Hope goal first off of Thea Jackson corner kick in the opening 40 minutes. Jackson later scored the second goal of the evening for the locals off a quality pass from Maddie Butterworth.

It was a momentous night in net for MHHS freshman keeper Moira Ware, who not only earned her first varsity start, but also collected the initial shutout of her career while making eight saves. Due to injury and a change in tactics, Mt. Hope head coach Kerri Giarusso recently opted to move previous starting goalie Emily Moran into the field for defensive purposes.

Girls' tennis
The struggles for the MHHS girls' tennis team continued, although the Huskies showed plenty of grit despite being shutout by Smithfield, 7-0, Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Huskies fell to 2-5 overall with the defeat.

Elena Oliveira played the tightest of the matches, losing at second singles by a 6-4, 6-4 score. At one, Emma Coelho played a close second set but fell 1-and-5. Emma Alice Caetano went to a second set tiebreaker before falling 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Kaia Brown fell 1-and-2 fourth singles.

In doubles, Mt. Hope's top tandem of Maggie Dufficy-Alexa Sousa lost 6-1, 7-5. At two, Avery Walsh and Hazel Bradley dropped a 1-and-1 decision. And at third pairs, Ava Cabral and Charlotte Arsenault also went to a breaker in the second, but lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

KMS Soccer
The Kickemuit Middle School soccer clubs began last week by continuing keep their respective records unblemished as both beat their opposition from Gaudet/Middletown Monday afternoon, Sept. 30.

The KMS girls improved to 9-0-0 with the win, but did allow their first goal of the fall by besting Gaudet, 10-1. Brooke Avila scored four of the goals for the Huskies. Mya Salvatore had a pair. Macy Bredd, Alaina Enes, Genevieve Rolando and Charlotte Loftus netted one each. Rolando and Bredd had assists. Ava Pereira made five saves in goal for the locals.

The KMS boys and Gaudet played to a nil-nil draw. Andrew Vieira needed to make four saves to keep the clean sheet in net for the locals. Tyler Motta, Alejandro Escalante and Kobe King were the other defensive standouts for the Huskies, whose record moved to 5-0-4 at the time.
