If Monday night’s Westport Select Board meeting felt like a retirement party, Steven Ouellette wasn’t having it.
“You’ll still be seeing me, don’t worry,” he said.
Ouellette, who has served Westport in one capacity or another for more than two decades, attended his last meeting as a select board member Monday, four and a half months after he was elected state representative for the 8th Bristol District and 23 years after he first started volunteering for the town.
His colleagues had a citation made up for the occasion, and chairwoman Shana Teas rattled off a long list of accomplishments and initiatives he’s been involved with over the years — economic development, infrastructure, town finances and many others. And she added a few thoughts of her own, telling the freshman representative that “I just learned so much from you about community and how to get things done. You’ve made a contribution to Westport, you’ve made your mark.”
Ouellette started in his new role on January 1, but chose to stay on the select board until the last meeting prior to the April 8 town election to save the town the cost of holding a special election.
He said one of the best parts of his work here has been “the good you can do, the stuff people don’t see behind the scenes. I appreciate everybody I’ve worked with.”
A few current and former colleagues returned the compliment.
“Just a pleasure to work with,” former select board member Tony Vieira said.
“We had our differences over the years, certainly, but a lot of respect. We’re proud of you. Proud that you’re working for Westport, always have been. Thank you — it’s been a pleasure.”
“It was an honor to work with you, Steve,” board member Richard Brewer added. “We elected the right person to go up to Beacon Hill.”
