Newport Classical: Oboist James Austin Smith

Posted

Newport Classical brings oboist James Austin Smith and pianist Gloria Chien to downtown Newport for a compelling recital featuring music by William Grant Still, Clara Schumann, Camille Saint-Saens, and more! Praised for his "virtuosic," "dazzling," and "brilliant" performances (New York Times) and his "bold, keen sound" (The New Yorker), James Austin Smith boasts an extensive chamber music career. He appears regularly at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, at Carnegie Hall, on tour as Co-Principal Oboe of the conductor-less Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and as an artist of the International Contemporary Ensemble.

Newport Classical's Chamber Series takes place at Newport Classical Recital Hall in downtown Newport, known for its striking architecture and excellent acoustics. The Chamber Series reaffirms Newport Classical's commitment to year-round classical music programming. Audiences are invited to enjoy performances by world-class classical musicians in a relaxed setting, with a complimentary glass of wine from Greenvale Vineyards and homemade treats by Newport Classical volunteers.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
