PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Patriots varsity boys’ baseball team defeated East Providence 5-0 on Monday, as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout.

John Mass led the Patriots to victory on the mound. The righ-thander allowed just one hit and no runs over six innings, striking out 14. Owen Malone threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen and secured the shutout.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Mac Dunn singled to score Malone, who had previously stolen second base after a walk.

Gavin Bicho bunt-singled to get on base in the fifth inning and was brought home after a triple by Caleb Banks.

Portsmouth notched three runs in the sixth inning. The offensive onslaught by the Patriots was led by Dunn, Teagan Brady, and Chris Chagnon, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

A single by Lorenz in the fifth inning was a positive for East Providence.

Brady, Caleb Banks, Gavin Bicho, Malone, Chagnon, David Spigel, and Dunn each collected one hit for the Patriots. Portsmouth did not commit any errors in the field.

Jayden Barber took the loss for East Providence. He went five and a third innings, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out four and walking one.
