PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High boys’ varsity basketball team made easy work of Middletown in its home opener last Thursday in the PHS field house, cruising to a 70-37 victory.

The team also had little trouble with Cumberland on Saturday, also at home, cruising to a 61-47 win.

The Patriots will host the East Bay Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27. The tourney will feature Middletown, Barrington, Moses Brown, Mt. Hope and St. Raphael Academy. The first game is at noon, with the last scheduled for 4 p.m.

Here are the other home games on this season’s schedule, all starting at 6 p.m.:

• Friday, Jan. 3, 2025: La Salle Academy

• Friday, Jan. 10: Times 2 Academy

• Monday, Jan. 13: Central

• Tuesday, Jan. 21: Cranston East

• Thursday, Jan. 23: Tolman

• Friday, Jan. 31: Lincoln

• Tuesday, Feb. 4: East Providence

• Wednesday, Feb. 12: Smithfield

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
