Portsmouth High swim team competes against PCD/St. Ray’s

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams both fell to the Providence Country Day/St. Raphael Academy teams during a meet at Roger Williams University in Bristol on Monday.

The girls scored 38 points, while PCD/St. Ray’s garnered 55. The boys lost 27-50. Both teams compete in Division II.

“We had quite a few second- and third-place finishes,” said Apryll Steen, head coach of both PHS swim teams. “Overall, I knew it was going to be a tough meet but I’m very happy with how everyone swam.”

The Patriots did have three first-place finishers: Kathryn Pimentel won the girls’ 50-yard freestyle in 31.4 seconds, and Ella Gilpin came in first in the girls’ 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.97, and Marc Alcolea Vila won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.88.

Here’s a summary of other results of the Patriots’ performances.

Girls:

• The 200 medley relay team of Ella Gilpin, Mae Marston, Emily Steen, and Bella Barber took second place, while another Patriots team consisting of Isabella Halstead, Honesty Baker, Kathryn Pimentel, and Nila Khoury took third.

• Bella Barber took second in the 200 freestyle.

• Mae Marston came in second in the 200 individual medley.

• Steen also took second place in the 100 free with a personal best time. Nila Khoury took third in the event.

• Honisty Baker came in second in the 50 freestyle.

• Mae Marston placed second in the 100 breaststroke.

• The 200 free relay team of Honisty Baker, Kathryn Pimentel, Aviva Bush, and Isabella Halstead came in second.

• The 400 free relay team of Gilpin, Barber, Steen, and Marston also took second place to end the meet.

Boys:

• The medley relay team of Marc Alcolea Vila, Tyler Butler, Quinn Sweeney, and Connor Kramer came in second.

• Marc Alcolea Vila also took a second-place finish in the 100 fly with a state qualifying time of 1:02.69. 

• Quinn Sweeney was third in the 200 individual medley, swimming a personal best time. He came in second in the 100 free.

Next up

The Patriots were scheduled to compete against the Cranston East/West co-op team on Tuesday afternoon. At 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, at RWU, the girls will compete against North Providence, while the boys face the Smithfield/North Providence/North Smithfield co-op team.
