PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School’s boys’ varsity basketball team broke a two-game losing streak by defeating East Providence in a double-overtime thriller Tuesday night, 66-59.

The win improved the Patriots’ record to 11-5 in Division I, while the Townies fell to 7-8. 

Portsmouth had lost back-to-back games to Central and Lincoln coming into the game, which was played in the PHS field house.

Portsmouth junior Adam Conheeny led all scorers with 24 points. Thomas Hurd added 11 points, while Will Alves and Kyle Bielawa scored 10 points apiece, and Jackson Hackley had 9

Tyler Gomez was the high scorer for East Providence, with 20 points.

The Patriots hit the road for their next three games — against Barrington at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6; Bishop Hendricken at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8; and Westerly at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10.

The team returns home on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when Smithfield visits at 6 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
