Portsmouth: Walk the battlefield at Heritage Park on Sept. 24
Tours will point out Battle of R.I. locations
PORTSMOUTH — Did you know Portsmouth has an important battlefield?
Within the town there’s an area of 365 acres that’s been designated an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The battlefield can be viewed from the elevated perch of Heritage Park off Hedly Street.
Learn more about Portsmouth’s role in the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778 during “Walking the Battlefield,” an event sponsored by the Portsmouth Conservation Commission on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Guides and speakers from The Battle of Rhode Island Association will take you through the action of the battle which took place on Aug. 29, 1778. The grounds of Heritage Park will have stations to represent battle skirmishes along East Main and West Main roads.
The first tour begins at 11 a.m., and the last tour starts at 11:45 a.m.
Heritage Park is located at the corner of Hedly Street and High Point Avenue.
