Carol Strause FitzSimonds honored for COVID-inspired work

PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth resident, artist and printmaker Carol Strause FitzSimonds recently received a national award at the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) 86th Annual Members Print Exhibition.

The exhibition is on view through April 16 in the Maxwell Mays and Mary Castelnovo galleries at the Providence Art Club.

Ms. FitzSimonds was recognized with The Arun Bose Memorial Award for Intaglio Printmaking for her work titled “In The Time of Covid.” Awards were selected by prominent printmaker and professor Andrew Raftery of the Rhode Island School of Design.

Ms. FitzSimonds is a longtime member of the Providence Art Club, where she has served as a printmaking instructor as well as a member of the Club’s Art and Education committees.

In 2017, she was one of only five American artists invited to exhibit work at the third edition of “Di Carta/Papermade,” the international biennale of works in paper in Schio, Italy. Her “Beauty in Place #2,” a concertina accordion book of 13 colored pencil drawings and one aquatint print, was displayed at the Palazzo Fogazzaro in Schio.

Ms. FitzSimonds was an integral force in bringing important printmaking shows featuring SAGA as well as The Boston Printmakers to the Club this spring. Both shows, which are on view concurrently at the Providence Art Club, reflect the best in American printmaking today.

SAGA was founded in 1915 and has exhibited the work of many significant artists, including Henri Matisse, Käthe Kollwitz, John Sloan, Edward Hopper, Pablo Picasso, Mary Cassatt, Joseph Pennell, John Marin, Childe Hassam, Will Barnet and John Taylor Arms.

All exhibitions at the Providence Art Club are free and open to all. Visit providenceartclub.org for more information.
