Portsmouth’s Island Park Playground to get facelift

Basketball court will also get an upgrade

PORTSMOUTH — The playground in Island Park will soon have a new look.

On Tuesday, Oct. 12, the Town Council voted unanimously to approve a request by Brian Woodhead, director of the Public Works Department, to go forward with plans to replace some equipment at the Island Park Playground beginning Nov. 1.

On that date, DPW will close the playground for the removal of all equipment except for the swing structure, train, pole care spring rider, and the whale spring rider. The department will also carry out site work preparation for the installation of new play structures beginning Nov. 15, Woodhead said, adding that playground will be closed for about two months.

O’Brien & Sons will install two new “playscapes” — one for ages 2 to 5 and another for ages 5 to 12. The company will also install new swing sets, a “Double Bobble Spring Rider” for ages 2 to 5; and a “Chill Spinner,” “Curva Spinner,” and a “Fitcore Extreme Rope Climb” for ages 5 to 12.

During budget hearings earlier this year, $146,000 was set aside under parks and playgrounds in the Capital Improvement Plan.

Basketball court upgrade

The council also voted unanimously to approve spending no more than $35,000 from the town’s capital reserve fund to upgrade the basketball court in Island Park.

DPW will remove the old playing surface of the 75x39-foot court and excavate the area to accommodate a new court that will measure 84x50 feet with striping, Woodhead said.
