Providence lights up with fireworks and more on New Year's

The Providence Tourism Council, the City of Providence and Mayor Brett P. Smiley are hosting the second annual citywide New Year’s Eve celebration with the Illuminate PVD Fireworks at the 195 District Park and the Michael Van Leesten Pedestrian Bridge on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Festivities will illuminate the night from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be a mix of experiential tents with interactive art activations, music, and roaming entertainment promising enjoyment for all ages. A mix of food trucks and The Guild will be on hand, serving beverages to the 21+ crowd.

There will be a lighting of WaterFire’s braziers surrounding the pedestrian bridge, starting at 7 p.m., setting the stage for the Providence Tourism Council's Illuminate PVD Fireworks show at 8:30 p.m.sharp. The surrounding park area and The Michael Van Leesten Pedestrian Bridge offers the perfect vantage point of the fireworks on the Providence River.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
