The Puddingstone music series opens their 2025 season this Sunday, Feb. 2, with “Piano à Deux: Love Songs from Around the World,” featuring the critically acclaimed Psychopomp Ensemble.
In Greek mythology, a Psychopomp is a conductor of souls.
Co-founded by pianists Chi-Wei Lo and Xiaopei Xu, Psychopomp Ensemble blends improvisation, re-composition, and unaltered portions into original works. They guide both connoisseurs and newcomers through their musical universe with solo, four-hand, and two-piano performances. Described by critics as offering “new directions in pianism” and exploring the “far reaches of musical possibilities,” the ensemble brings an edge to the piano repertoire.
“Piano à Deux: Love Songs from Around the World” celebrates love in all its forms, featuring Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Smetana’s “The Moldau,” works by Hindemith, and Psychopomp’s heartfelt tribute to Bach. The performers will also offer their own arrangements and improvisations of music by jazz legends Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Ran Blake, and the modern sensation Laufey, among others. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration where love knows no borders!
