Pushing the pile penalty stalls key Eagles’ drive

BHS football team loses playoff opener, 28-14

The Barrington High School football team looked poised to take a 21-14 second-half lead against Burrillville on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 9.

The Eagles opened the game with 14 straight points, but the Broncos responded with two touchdowns in the second quarter and sent the Division II playoff game into halftime knotted at 14-14.

Barrington opened the third quarter with the ball and drove the 70 yards for the apparent go-ahead score. On first and goal inside the five-yard line, running back Charly Potter took a hand-off and plowed into the end zone. But officials dropped a penalty flag and called back the touchdown — they ruled that other Barrington players had helped push Potter across the goal line.

The penalty dropped the Eagles back five yards and on two straight runs, the Broncos stonewalled the Eagles’ ballcarriers. Burrillville scored two more times en route to a 28-14 win over Barrington.

The Eagles opened the first half with stellar plays on both sides of the ball. On defense, Henry Stockwell intercepted a Burrillville pass in the end zone. And on offense, Potter capped two drives with touchdown runs.

Barrington’s defense struggled to slow down the Burrillville passing attack. On numerous occasions, the Eagles defense would force a third-and-long only to give up a first down through the air.

The loss spelled the end of the Division I playoffs for Barrington.

Next up for the Eagles is a Thanksgiving showdown against Mt. Hope. The game will be played in Bristol this year.
