Abby Razzino scored 17 points as the Mt. Hope girls basketball trounced Tiverton 55-28 in a Division II match up on Monday night. The Huskies have won three straight for an overall record of 5-3. Razzino, who missed last season with an ACL injury, is starting to resemble the player she was as a sophomore when she consistently took over games and led the team in scoring.  

“Abby had a huge tournament for us and another big game tonight,” said head coach Katherine Kline. “She’s really stepped up as a captain and a leader on the court. We’re very happy to have her back.” 

The Huskies have worked hard to become a strong defensive team and have started to gel on offensive this season under Coach Kline. They capitalized on steals and scored in transition while in a full court press for much of the first half. 

“It was a total team effort,” Coach Kline said. “Between Abby, Elsa and Lilly at the guard positions. Our bigs, Reyn, Lauren and Emily, everyone stepped up.” Coach Kline was glad to have Reyn Ferris back on the court. The tall center brought down some big rebounds on offense for the Huskies in the first half. 

Ferris the Huskies’ center, scored 4 points in the first quarter. Razzino, White, DaSilveira and Moran each scored as Mt. Hope took a 13-6 first quarter lead. Razzino netted 5 more points, White sank a 3-pointer and Clarke-Pais sank a jumper as the Huskies stretched the lead to 25-15 at halftime. 

“We are gelling together really well,” said co-captain Shivani Metha, who has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain this season. The senior guard has been holding a clip board and helping out the coaches from the bench. “I try to hype everybody up. I’m keeping track of points and doing the book. But I’m hoping to come back very soon.” 

Razzino caught fire in the third quarter and drained a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of jumpers for 10 points as the Huskies took a 35-18 lead after three quarters. Coach Kline sat Razzino in the fourth quarter with the game in hand. White scored 7 points with a 3-pointer to lead the team in the fourth quarter. The speedy guard has played well during the team’s three game winning streak. Ferris sank a pair of close range jumpers, Moran sank a 3-pointer and DaSilveira added a jumper in the fourth quarter. 

“Elsa has been super consistent,” said Coach Kline. “Whenever she takes it, I trust it’ll go in. Also defensively she’s been great up top and in press situations. She is good at getting her hands on the ball and making a lot of steals.” 

Coach Kline plans to have the Huskies playing aggressive defense going forward as Mt. Hope faces stiffer Division II competition in the next few weeks. “We need to hone in our skills in practice,” she said. “And play aggressive defensive. We have been putting up the points each game. I think our defense needs to be better, so team’s aren’t scoring more points than us.”

Next up: The Huskies travel to Mt. Pleasant on Friday at 6 p.m., host Cranston East on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and travel to Moses Brown on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
