Rhode Island Black Film Festival: “Black Culture in Film”

Posted

The Rhode Island Black Film Festival, “Black Culture in Film” will run from April 20 to April 23 at locations around Providence, including Pepsi Forum Auditorium, Johnson & Wales University,  Providence Public Library, and Brown University.

“The festival is a rare opportunity in Providence to fully engage with the world through the medium of film,” says Ann Clanton, managing director and founder of the Rhode Island Black Film Festival (RIBFF). “Every year we can bring together the greater Providence film enthusiast community to screen films across the spectrum that address everyday issues and celebrate ordinary people in history,” says Managing Director Ann Clanton. This year’s festival theme, ‘Black Culture in Film really encapsulates everything we are seeing and feeling every day around us.”

Among the highlights of this festival, some notable showings include "Bonnie Blues: James Cotton Life in the Blues," and "Little Richard: I am Everything."

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
