The 11U team Rumford Little League team fell to Barrington 4-3 in extra innings during a Division game at Sherwood Field in Barrington on Monday night. Rumford took a 3-2 lead in the seventh, loading the bases and scoring a run on a fielder’s choice double play. But Barrington’s Zak Oppler slammed a two-run double in the bottom of the inning scoring the tying and winning runs.
The Rumford defense played well behind starting pitcher Donovan Bazar, who struck out 7, while scattering 7 hits, one walk and 2 runs in 6 innings. Reliever Charlie Constantino came on for the seventh and took the loss.
Barrington loaded the bases and scored a run in the first inning, but Rumford made a triple-play to get out of the inning further unscathed. Shortstop Mason Ferreira leaped in the air to snare a Barrington line drive. He wheeled and threw to second base to catch the Barrington runner off base for the second out. Constantino, the second baseman, eyeing the Barrington runner sneaking home, threw to catcher Jameson Bazar and he spun and tagged out Rocco Coppolino to end the inning.
Andrew Mitchell drove in two runs for Rumford, who scored twice in the fourth inning. Constantino recorded two hits and scored a run. Teagan Smith and Jameson Bazar each walked and scored a run.
