Westerly ends East Providence's recent baseball win streak

Bulldogs snap Townies' run at six in a row

EAST PROVIDENCE — The recent East Providence High School baseball winning streak came to an end early last week after the Townies were held scoreless in a 7-0 loss to host Westerly on Tuesday, May 16, ending the locals' run on six  Division II victories in a row.

EP dropped to 11-5 in the league standings at the time, still good enough to sit atop the II-A subgroup standings.

The Townies mustered just two hits all game, singles by Manny Santos and Oliver Andrews, off of Bulldogs' pitcher Michael Poole. A sophomore, Poole pitched a complete game, walked two and struck out 10. He only faced one batter over the minimum 27.

Westerly took the lead with three runs off of EPHS starter Dylan Annicelli in the third inning, then tacked on two more in the fourth. All five runs charged to Annicelli were earned. He allowed eight hits, walked three and fanned four. The Bulldogs added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, both earned, off of Townie reliever Jack McKnight.

Last week, EPHS won three times, including a 12-0 victory over host Woonsocket in a Division II outing during which Tim Robitaille tossed a one-hit shutout.

The sophomore righty struck out six and didn't walk a batter while facing only one batter over the limit in the game that ended after six due to the 10-Run Rule.

Offensively, the Townies broke open the game with an eight spot in the top of the sixth. Robitaille helped himself with three runs batted in.

Brian Rutkowski also plated three on a pair of hits and also scored twice. Steven Estrella and Austin Martins added two hits apiece. Ziurel Vargas, McKnight and Andrews each scored a pair of runs.

The sides played a rematch in city Saturday morning, May 13, the Townies holding off the Villa Novans for a 5-4 win. Vargas drove in three runs and had a pair of hits. McKnight also had two hits and scored twice. Robitaille and Kyler Lorenz had the other RBI.

Robitaille picked up the decision, throwing all seven innings, allowing seven hits while striking out five and walking three. All four Woonsocket runs were earned.

EPHS never trailed after scoring a run in the bottom of the first. The Townies eventually held a 3-1 lead before the Novans tied the score with two in the top of the sixth.

EPHS answered with two of their own in the home half to retake the lead. Woonsocket scored once in top of the seventh, but Robitaille averted any more damage to secure the win.
