The perfect charcuterie board: coming soon to Water Street

Posted

What’s better than good meats, cheeses, preserves and complementary, palate-pleasing accoutrements? Putting those pieces together on a fancy slab of wood and enjoying them all with some good friends, of course.

Water Street wanderers will soon be able to visit a one-stop-shop for all your charcuterie board needs.

Wedge, a specialty cheese shop, has received Town Council and Zoning Board approval to move into the building at 279 Water Street (formerly occupied by the Muse jewelry shop), and hope to open some time in November. It will be owned and operated by Barrington residents Sasha Goldman and Chelsea Morrissey.

“I moved to Barrington two years ago and [Chelsea] moved here five years ago from the greater Boston area,” said Goldman. “Our kids became really good friends and we just started talking about how the East Bay Area seemed like it was getting so fun and cool. And there are so many great restaurants but not necessarily a go-to place to buy stuff to put together for a little dinner plate for your house. We wanted a place to make charcuterie boards for your home.”

Wedge plans to offer everything to make an Instagram-worthy charcuterie board, including a local selection of honey, lots of chocolate options and, of course, the crackers, meats, cheeses, and preserves that form the backbone of any good board. Customers will be able to purchase a ready-made board, custom order their own, or choose their own ingredients in-store.

Goldman said that they are planning to partner with as many local and regional businesses to sell their products, and are already in talks with companies that have formed out of Hope & Main, including fine chocolate truffle purveyor Hawt Chocolate and Kristi’s Kraft Mocktails. Goldman mentioned that, eventually, they hope to get into crafting gift baskets.

“We’re hoping it’s a nice, fun place to stop in and try some samples and find some stuff you want to bring home,” she said.

When asked why charcuterie boards have seemingly exploded in popularity in recent years, Goldman — who earned a PhD from Columbia’s School of Journalism — said that she believes part of the answer lies in the chaos brought on by the lockdowns of the pandemic.

“I think during the pandemic when everyone was home, and I know personally for me it was boring and kind of depressing, we looked for rituals to give our life a rhythm during the week and make life seem more special,” she said. “I think putting something beautiful together and being able to photograph it and share it on Instagram, I think that was part of it.”

The reason may also be a bit less complicated for some, too.

“Now it’s just a good way to entertain at home. It’s kind of casual but still feels elevated,” Goldman said. “I think that’s how people want to eat. They don’t want to just sit down and eat a heavy meal, but it’s fun to pick at things and curate your own meals.”
