Greet the New Year with a dip in the ocean. There are several “plunges” offered in the East Bay.

Dip in the Bay

The Barrington Business & Community Association’s third annual New Year’s Day Dip in the Bay is on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at noon at Barrington Beach, Lorraine Street. This year, organizers are hoping to raise $10,000 — the money will be evenly divided between Tap-In, which combats food insecurity and economic hardship for East Bay residents, and the Barrington Lions Club, which uses these funds to provide scholarships for local high school students.

This year’s dip is sponsored byResidential Properties. For more information or to sign up, visit www.barringtonbca.com

Penguin Plunge

The Tiverton Yacht Club is sponsoring its 13th Penguin Plunge at Grinnell’s Beach on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The public is invited to gather on the beach at 1860 Main Road at 11:45 a.m. and take the plunge into the Sakonnet River at noon. The event supports the Tiverton Public Library through donations from participants and supporters who watch the event from the shore.

Though not required, penguins are encouraged to obtain library donations in advance. Pledge forms are at www.tivertonlibrary.org. For more information, call 625-6796 or contact Greg Jones at jonesgb@cox.net.

High noon plunge

The first official event sponsored by LC350, the committee formed to organize Little Compton’s 350th birthday celebrations, will be a high noon plunge in Sakonnet Harbor on Wednesday, Jan. 1. It will be held adjacent to the boat ramp and warm drinks and hot soup for all will be given out at the community center on the Commons after.

For more information, visit www.lc350.com.

Portsmouth Plunge

Portsmouth's annual plunge takes place at noon at Island Park, and includes a large bonfire on the beach. Read more about it here.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
