The Tiverton softball team crushed Cranston East 14-2 in the D-3 Winner's Bracket final at RIC on Monday night. The Tigers will now play in the state championship game against the loser's bracket winner at RIC on Saturday.
The mighty Tigers bashed out 14 hits and scored 5 runs in first, 4 in the second, 1 in the third and 4 more in the fourth before the game was called due to the 10-run rule.
Sophomore Brooke Sowa led the Tiverton attack, smacking 3 hits, driving in 3 runs and scoring 3 runs. Jersey-Ann Hastie also tallied 3 hits, Lia Doster, Sara Poland, Lily Luis each had two hits and Sadie Pickering and Lexi Boissonneau each had one.
Doster was more democratic this game, striking out just one batter, while yielding just 3 hits and 2 runs in four innings.
Tigers red-hot at the plate
The 16-3 Tigers have been red-hot at the plate during the playoffs. Tiverton bashed 14 hits during their 11-2 win over the Pawtucket Co-op in the winner's bracket quarterfinals and then smashed 18 hits during their comeback win over Narragansett in the semifinals.
"They got back up by one in the top of the sixth," said Tigers head coach Mike Brigham. "But we really piled on the runs in the bottom of inning."
Tiverton scored 9 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the victory.
"Hitting has been a big focus-point this year," he said. "They are getting Lots of hitting reps which allows them to work on mechanics off tees and then hop in the new batting cage for plenty of live reps off the machine."
Seniors leading the attack
Seniors Jersey-Ann Hastie, Sadie Pickering, junior sophomores Sara Poland, Carlie Martin and freshman Kelsey Conway, led the Tiverton attack. Hastie smashed 5 hits including a pair of doubles, drove in 4 runs and scored 6 runs. Pickering tallied 4 hits with two doubles, drove in 4 runs and scored a run. Poland had 3 hits, with a double and drove in 5 runs and scored 3 runs. Martin, the cleanup hitter, bashed 3 hits with two doubles, drove in 5 runs and scored 2 runs. Conway tallied 5 hits with a double and drove in 3 runs and scored 4 runs.
Senior Lexi Boissonneau, who hits at the bottom of the lineup, had a pair of hits, drove in 4 runs and scored 5 runs. Leadoff hitter and pitcher, Lia Doster posted 4 hits, 2 rbi and 3 runs.
Doster stealthy against Pawtucket
Doster was stealthy against Pawtucket, striking out 9, while yielding no walks and a single run in five innings of work. The defense played well behind her, making just one error as the offense over powered Pawtucket, scoring 2 runs in the third, 3 in the fourth and 6 in the fifth. The game was called due to the ten-run rule.
Tigers freshman pitcher Lily Luis got into trouble early in the game against the Mariners as they scored 3 runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. Luis pitched well in the middle innings with 8 strike outs, while giving up 3 hits including a home run, 4 walks and 7 runs. Doster came on in relief and gave up 7 hits, 6 runs and a homer.
