The Tiverton baseball team ended their season falling to Woonsocket 8-2 in the Division 3 Pod Championship at home on Tuesday afternoon.

“ it was definitely a great season,” said head coach Matt McGuire. “We started off slow, but made a really strong run at the end. The seven seniors were outstanding and they upheld the tradition of Tiverton baseball—playing hard and being tough.”

Woonsocket scored two runs off Tigers starter Kam Rego for an early 2-0 lead. The senior then pitched three clean innings, striking out 3, while yielding 5 hits, a walk and 2 runs during his 4 inning stint.

Tiverton fought back offensively and scored runs in both the second and third innings to knot the game 2-2. Third baseman Kyle Rogers and left fielder Nolan Mercer came around to score. Second baseman James Connelly drove in both runs in each inning.

Woonsocket scores 3 runs in the fifth

The Villanovans broke the tie, scoring 3 runs in the fifth, 2 runs in the sixth and 1 more in the seventh.

Junior Nolan Mercer came on to pitch in place of Rego in the fifth inning.

“Kam has been a horse all year,” said Coach McGuire. “Playing from the loser’s bracket, we had to play four games in six days. He had thrown a lot.”

Mercer ran into trouble from the start, giving up 8 hits, 3 walks and 6 runs in his 2 plus innings of work. The Tigers defense also committed 5 errors.

Rich Helger came on in the seventh, but the damage was done.
