Some say that nothing in life is perfect. Those people never played for the 2025 East Providence girls varsity lacrosse team.
The Townies finished their title quest this past Sunday at Brown University, taking down second-ranked Smithfield for the fourth time this season in a Division 3 championship match that cemented an undefeated, utterly dominant season in which East Providence won all 17 of their games, scoring a season total of 244 goals to only 95 surrendered.
Prolific scorer Alyssa Karalekas led the way for the Townies, racking up an eye-popping seven goals in a superhuman effort (she surpassed 100 goals for the season in the semifinal game against Toll Gate). Kloey Iocavone, Dylan Flynn, and Katherine Almeida each netted a pair of goals, and Ella Benson chipped in a goal. Goalie Ava Williams made 14 saves in the match.
Just as it was all season, it was a team-oriented performance, with scoring coming from multiple girls, and rock-solid goaltending from Williams that brought East Providence to the top of the mountain.
“I am truly fortunate to have such a talented group of individuals; whether it's the scoring ability of Alyssa Karalekas, who scored her 100th career goal in the semifinal game the week before, and added another seven goals to that on Sunday,” said head coach Nick Boyce following the victory. “In addition, Kloey Iacavone's strong leadership and knowledge of the game and ability to communicate with teammates on the field to make as needed adjustments, and lastly but certainly not least, Ava Williams ability as a goalie to have 14 saves on Sunday.”
As the final whistle sounded and the girls mobbed each other in celebration, it became clearer than ever how united and tough this squad became over the course of the year. Considering the only games they had come close to losing all season all came against Smithfield — winning three games against them in the regular season by scores of 6-5, 8-7, and 9-7 — the blowout victory on Sunday also showed how confident the team had grown in seizing their undefeated destiny, and finishing the job.
“If you asked me what made us so successful this season, I would say it's the fact that my team always stayed positive even when we made mistakes; we would learn from those mistakes,” said Boyce. “It's not often that a team has an undefeated season, but it is something that I will remember for the rest of my coaching career.”
