The East Providence lacrosse team fell to Wheeler School 23-3 during a non-league game on Thursday night. Keigan Grant scored 2 goals, and Nolan Travassos with 1 goal 2 assists for the Townies who dropped their record to 3-4 in Division 4.
“We knew wheeler would be a tough matchup,” said head coach Zach Pangborn, who has been coaching East Providence lacrosse for 8 years. “Most of my students have been playing for three years or less. Wheeler has much more experience in that department. We’re not disappointed in the performance.”
Coach Pangborn played for the Townies lacrosse team from 2014-2017 and began coaching the team the very next year as a voluntary assistant. He became an assistant coach and then the head coach in 2023, when then head coach, John Monast stepped down.
“One of the main things I wanted to do as head coach was to inject some youth and energy into our program,” he said.
He quickly brought in Zach Hope as an assistant coach. Hope, 24, played division 2 college lacrosse.
“Every day we strive to make our students better athletes on the field, but more importantly better men off of the field and give them some lasting memories of their high school tenure.”
The Townies have been bitten by the injury bug of late with 5 players out against Wheeler.
“We only had one sub and our stamina definitely played a factor,” he said.
Townies on attack
The Townies have scored 56 goals in 7 games, offensively. Senior attacker Zack Kollet leads the team with 19 goals and 2 assists for 21 points. Junior Keigan Grant has scored 17 goals and dished out 7 assists for 24 points and Nolan Travassos has scored 11 goals and made 16 assists for 27 points. Senior Sam Jackson scored 4 goals and has 6 assists, senior Kendrick Costa scored 2 goals and 3 assists and seniors John Wooten, Tyler Rodrigues and Jeremiah Bradshaw each scored a goal.
Senior goaltender Alex Moreira has made 40 saves with 32 goals against. His backline consists of seniors Jason Brown, Darius Davis and Jordan Estrella. The Townies three wins are just one shy of last year’s total and Coach Pangborn is happy that the team is improving.
“Overall this year I think we’re in a good place. The team has come a long way in the past few years and we’re looking to build on that again,” he said.
