Senior Harmonie McDowell scored 14 points six others scored as the East Providence girls basketball team pounded Coventry 50-23 in a Division 2 home game on Friday night. The victory improved the Townies record to 3-0.
“We are working better as a team,” said McDowell, the Townies’ lone senior. “We have better communication. We know that we have to work together to win.”
East Providence ran out to a 14-6 first quarter lead. Four of the Townies five starters scored. McDowell, a swing guard, scored 4 points, sophomore center Audrey Bernard scored 4 of her 11 points from the paint, Zarae Hall and Nadiyah Carlouro-Vargas each scored 2 points for East Providence, who was placed down from Division 1 after a 3-18 record last season.
“It was a tough season. We were very young and didn’t communicate at all,” McDowell said.
The young and height challenged Townies kept up the pressure and took a 28-13 lead into halftime. East Providence scored 6 more in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth. McDowell led the Townies with 14 points, sophomore forward Audrey Bernard scored 11, junior guard Nadiyah Calouro-Vargas scored 8 points, sophomore guard Zarae Hall scored 5, junior forward Trinity Provencher, sophomore forward Kyanna Burgo and sophomore guard Kat Amado each scored 4.
The young townies play aggressively on defense and play more of a free-style offense with a point guard by committee with their guards McDowell, Hall and Colouro-Vargas.
“We want to catch the defense moving,” McDowell said. “We try to work the ball into the paint and get to the line as much as possible.”
Bernard and Provencher are the Townies main rebounders and scoring threats under the basket. Bernard has come a long way from last season, according to McDowell.
“Audrey has gotten stronger and more aggressive,” she said. “Sometimes they gang up on her underneath. I suppose that’s our fault.”
“Trinity is our most aggressive player to play against on and off the court,” McDowell said of Provencher. “She always hustles. She doesn’t take a minute off.”
The young Townies have played well against their first three opponents, beating South Kingstown 33-24 and Toll Gate 37-9, before putting up 50 points against Coventry and they are eager to show Division 2 what they are made of.
“Teams shouldn’t underestimate us,” McDowell said. “We have a lot of talent and we’re going to show it this season.”
