There was one day last week when a supernatural phenomenon reportedly known as “the sun” came out from behind gloomy rain clouds to spread some sorely-needed warmth — and Bill McEnery’s golf squad took full advantage of it on Wednesday afternoon at Agawam Hunt to practice for their upcoming season.
McEnery has spent around a half century coaching at East Providence High School (and around half of that as the school’s head coach for the golf team), and like the unexpectedly nice weather, he had sunny thoughts and high hopes for the team’s chances to do some big things this year.
“They have shown, thus far, great enthusiasm for the long road ahead,” he said.
The 2025 squad is led by returning juniors Nathan Carter and Noah Araujo. Carter and Araujo both made it to the second day of the state tournament last year and look to continue that momentum this year.
“Nathan has a great golf IQ. He is always willing to help out the other players on the team,” McEnery said. “Noah is a very reliable person. He also is willing to help others to improve their game.”
The rest of the crew includes a mix of new and returning players. Two freshmen, Jake Iacavone and Parker Andrews, along with Sophomore and sole female player on the team, Mary Maciel, look to provide a solid foundation for the team’s future. Three juniors are also represented, including Jericho Seals (returning to the team from last year), along with Jameson Moon, and Caleb Reynolds.
McEnery thanked the owners of Agawam Hunt for allowing the team multiple days to practice and host matches during the season. As in previous seasons, a partnership with Silver Spring Golf Course will allow the team to practice throughout the year.
“Lou Rivers, the Pro at Agawam Hunt, and his staff, have shown a positive attitude towards the team. They are willing to do anything to help out the team,” McEnery said. “Silver Spring has shown great support for the team. It is a great venue to do our skill work. We also get to play as much as possible at this little gem.”
East Providence will play their first match of the season at Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club on April 21 against Middletown and Portsmouth. Tee time is 3:00 p.m.
