The East Providence High School Unified Basketball League entry began its 2022 season in recent weeks, including a home game against Hope High Friday afternoon, March 25.
The Townies’ roster includes Marin Bessette, Jayden Delgado, Leah French, Josh Harris, Peter Kochan, Shane Lavin, Issiah Lopes, Angelo Masso, Erin McLaughlin, Ben Nascimento, Olivia Norwood, Ben Nunez, Brett Nardowski, Jayden Perreira, Alicia Pacheco, Denzel Sivels, Tyler Soares, Joseph Santana, Alex Vieira, Jaiden Wright and Colby Wallace. Kristen Coutoulakis is the head coach with Dana Brodin serving as the assistant.
Unified Hoops, which brings together Special Needs student-athletes with their peers from the general population, is a program co-sponsored by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and Special Olympics-Rhode Island.
The rest of the 2022 EPHS Unified Basketball team schedule is as follows: April 6: 3:30 p.m., home vs. Shea High School; April 13: 3:30 p.m., at Tolman High School, Pawtucket; April 14: 4 p.m., at Mt. Pleasant High School, Providence; April 28: 3:30 p.m., home vs. Juanita Sanchez; May 7: Unified Basketball Championships at Bishop Hendricken High School, times TBD.
Coutoulakis said some of the goals for the season “are to create and foster friendships that last beyond the court and the season, while of course having fun.”
The April 6 game will support breast cancer awareness with a “Pink Out.” The Townies will be selling t-shirts and accepting donations to mark the occasion, with proceeds going to the Rhode Island “Pink Heels” organization.
Also, EPHS, which also offers a Unified Volleyball each fall, will be designated by R.I. Special Olympics as a “Unified Champion School.” The school will be unveiling a new banner noting the honor at its April 28 home game.
Coutoulakis added of the SORI accolade, “this prestigious award celebrates East Providence's rich culture of inclusion in our high school community.”
