Townies turnovers pave way for Mariners

East Providence girls basketball succumbs to Narragansett 55-32

The East Providence girls basketball succumbed to first-place Narragansett 55-32 in a Division 2 home game on Wednesday night. The loss dropped the Townies record to 11-5.

“Tough loss,” said Townies head coach Tammy Drape. “We just didn’t come to play last night. I know the team will bounce back in our next game on senior night.”

The Townies are currently tied for third place with Scituate and North Smithfield and trail the first place Mariners and second place Tiverton with three games left to platy in the regular season.

Narragansett came out strong and never looked back as they ran off to a 21-6 lead after the first quarter. East Providence played sloppy making it easy for the Mariners to make easy steals in transition, cause turnovers, grab rebounds and make uncontested layups.

“Narragansett’s defensive intensity is commendable,” Coach Drape said. “Their ability to force multiple turnovers is a testament to their hard work on defense.”

The Townies attempted to fight back into the game in the second quarter. Zarae Hall drained a 3-pointer for three of her team high 11 points. Harmonie McDowell buried a jumper and Trinity Provencher and Audrey Bernard each drove to the basket for a score. But Narragansett kept up the pace and sank their shots. They outscored the Townies 18-10 in the second quarter and 13-4 in the third, before taking their foot off the pedal in the fourth quarter.

East Providence, who won five in a row before the loss, will look to get back on track as they host Johnston on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Townies then travel to North Smithfield on Tuesday, 2/11, and East Greenwich Thursday, 2/13.

East Providence scoring: Zarae Hall scored 11 points, Harmonie McDowell netted 8, Audrey Bernard scored 6, Melissa Talevi scored 3, Trinity Provencher and Katherine Amado each scored 2.
