Warren trash pickup days are going to change, starting July 10

Posted

Warren residents will soon have to adjust to a new schedule for when they take their garbage and recycling bins out to the curb for pickup.

During their May meeting, the Warren Town Council approved the proposed changes set forth by DPW Director Brian Wheeler. As a result, pickup days for trash and recycling will change beginning the week of July 10 — a strategic move to get past the July 4th holiday season and begin fresh with a new route schedule, Wheeler said during a recent interview.

Wheeler explained the changes to trash routes were proposed for a couple of reasons.

Wheeler said that the town’s contracted garbage removal company, MEGA Disposal, had become overburdened by because the town’s most logistically challenging pickup route fell on a Friday, which had caused delays that necessitated extended hours for the contractors or even pushing the pickup into the following Monday, which complicated Monday’s pickup further.

Additionally, he said the department has received multiple complaints regarding trash being left out along the main roads where pedestrians and visitors to the town frequent, because of the schedule that currently exists.

For example, since Child Street and Market Street both currently have Monday pickup for trash, Wheeler said it wasn’t uncommon to see trash bins being put out as early as Saturday along those main drags for the Monday pickup, which meant during the peak visiting hours during the weekend, people were walking along businesses and residences with garbage bins lining the sidewalk.

“These changes will help with the beautification of town,” Wheeler reasoned. "I understand the routes have been the same for a very long time, but my job is to do what’s best for the town, and that’s all I’m trying to do. I care about this town a lot and want to make sure we’re doing right by everybody, including the contractors that work for us."
