Weekend crash claims life of young Westport woman

Driver charged with DUI after rollover in Middletown

Posted

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 22-year-old Westport resident who died early Saturday when the car in which she was a passenger rolled over near Middletown’s Third Beach.

Kailyn Newton, daughter of Fred and Karen Newton of Westport and sister “and best friend” of Kelsey Newton, graduated from Bishop Connolly High School in 2015 and was a student at Providence College.

Her obituary said of her, “Kailyn lit up every room she entered with her contagious energy and unforgettable smile. She’ll be remembered forever as fiercely independent, selfless, kind, and brave. She’ll be thought of with every sunrise, sunset, trip to the beach, or any time there is fun to be had, as Kailyn was the life of every party.”

Middletown Police charged the car’s driver, Patrick Carson, 23, of Newport, with driving under the influence, death resulting, and driving to endanger, death resulting. He was arraigned over the weekend and released on $50,000 bail with surety pending an appearance in 2nd District Court, Newport.

Middletown Police said Ms. Newton was unresponsive when they responded at the 830 Beach Road accident location shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday. She was pronounced dead at Newport Hospital.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 23, at 11 a.m. in St. Louis de France Church, 56 Buffington St., Swansea.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice, or do something kind for someone else in Kailyn’s memory.

Arrangements entrusted to the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, Somerset, which has a memorial page on its website..
