“Savannah hits the ball so hard,” said head coach Monique Jones. “She drills it. It’s very hard to return.”
The 11-10 Wildcats move on in the tournament to face Sutton in the round of 32 (this game is late Monday, I’ll get you the score when I know).
“I wish it was more competitive,” said senior co-captain Zoe Sylvain, who has been playing for the Wildcats since eighth grade. “Though I’m glad we get to move on and play Sutton.”
Sylvain made 3 kills, an ace and 3 service points for the 19th ranked Wildcats.
I’m really proud of the girls,” said Coach Jones. They did a tremendous job this year. This is a big thing for us and we’re excited to keep going.”
Senior captains lead by example
Sylvain and senior co-captain Jayda Pequita lead the Wildcats with their play. Pequita the team’s libero made 4 digs, defensively during the game against Neighborhood House. She also served up 7 aces during her 22 service points, a team high.
“They are amazing captains,” said Coach Jones. “They were both selected Mayflower League all-stars. They are true leaders both on and off the court.”
Slyvain gives up playing time to get her younger teammates in the game when the Wildcats have the game in hand.
“She’s selfless,” said Coach Jones. “Zoe is vocal on the court and gets the team going.”
Sophomore setter Kylie Hazel, who had 17 assists with 7 aces and 13 service points against Neighborhood, has also been an important player this season.
“She has accumulated over 600 assists,” said Coach Jones. “She strives to get better every practice, every game.”
Westport has an uphill battle, but with a good mix of seniors and underclassmen, they may have what it takes to make waves in the tournament.

Girls soccer travels to Nashoba Valley in Round of 32
The 17th seeded girls soccer team travels to 16th ranked Nashoba Valley Tech on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The 12-2-3 Wildcats have a young, but talented team and a gem in skilled eighth grade forward Lily Veracka. The slight, yet ferocious, forward scored 23 goals this season, beating her seventh grade total of 22. Both are Westport High School records for the girls team. She has also accumulated 102 points during her first two seasons.
“Lily has a sense for the net,” said head coach Gary Muello. “She doesn’t have to be looking at it. She just knows where it is and can finish."
If Veracka and the talented Wildcats win in the round of 32, they would face the winner of 33rd seeded McCann Tech or 1st seeded Douglas in the round of 16.
